We are Researchers, Story Tellers and History Buffs discovering and sharing NEW CONNECTIONS about How the Civil War Changed our Money ....and how Money Changed the War....See a few highlights below....
Before the Civil War, money was printed by States, Towns, Banks and Businesses...
A Federal Currency (Greenbacks) and Banking System replaced this mish-mash of paper money...with a Special "Green Tint" to minimize counterfeiting, which was rampant at the time.
Producing millions of dollars of paper money required a new work force. Mr. Francis Spinner began to hire women
at the US Treasury....a first.
An estimated 20,000,000 tokens were privately designed and minted to make up for the severe lack of Small Change. Hoarding combined with the loss of three US Branch Mints in the South crippled local economies...without entrepreneurial token production....until 1864.
